Futurecasting Experiments

Try on alternate futures like clothes... find the one that actually fits.

Architecture of Futurecasting

Futurecasting turns imagination into a series of small-scale experiments. Instead of passively planning a single outcome, you generate multiple plausible futures... each reflecting different values, roles and environments... and then prototype micro-behaviours or rituals to test which scenario feels most authentic and sustainable.

How Futurecasting Runs

Rather than committing to one vision, you run a cycle of:

  1. Scenario generation (sketch 3 distinct futures)
  2. Micro-prototyping (choose one small habit or context from each)
  3. Data gathering (observe how you think, feel and act in each)
  4. Iteration (adjust the next set of experiments based on feedback)

This iterative loop refines your life design in real time, helping you inhabit the future that truly fits.

Diagnostic Lens: Scenario–Value Alignment Scan

This lens evaluates each future scenario against your core values and lifestyle constraints. By mapping which values are honoured or compromised in each imagined future, you reveal which possibilities align with your evolving identity and which feel forced or unsustainable.

Hey! I'm Chris.

I teach smart people how to feel human again.

[The Dirt] Newsletter offers brain-rewiring, metaphor-slinging, self-authorship tools for mental misfits (like you?).

This is not "self help" in any traditional sense. This is the recovery of your agency. Literally.

It's like therapy, but with less crying and more “Oh… that explains everything!”

A Story of Try-On Testing

Jade sketched three career futures:

  • Consultant Leader—managing teams remotely
  • Solo Creator—launching a niche podcast
  • Corporate Innovator—driving change within a large firm

She then spent a week living each future in micro: leading a small remote project, recording daily podcast snippets, shadowing an innovation team. After each test, she journalled her energy levels, satisfaction and sense of purpose. The Solo Creator prototype felt most energising, so she doubled down on that path.

A Mini-Workshop: Future Wardrobe Try-On

Use this to prototype multiple futures without full commitment:

  1. Generate three futures—briefly describe each in 2–3 sentences.
  2. Select one micro-experiment for each (e.g. pitch a workshop, record a video, join a corporate strategy call).
  3. Schedule each test for at least one hour over the next week.
  4. Observe what thoughts, feelings and behaviours arise in each.
  5. Rate each on a 1–5 scale for alignment with your values, energy, and real-life feasibility.
  6. Review the scores and journal which future you most want to inhabit further.

Each test is a fitting session for your life’s design.

Collaborative Reflection: Future Salon

Gather with a peer or small group. Each person presents their three scenarios and prototype outcomes. Group members ask clarifying and challenge questions... “What felt most authentic? What drained your energy?”... then suggest one additional micro-experiment to refine the most promising future.
